Prof. Nicole Buote, DVM, DACVS-SA, ACVS Founding Fellow (Minimally Invasive Surgery – Soft Tissue), is an Associate Professor of Small Animal Surgery at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, one of the world's leading veterinary institutions. She is a board-certified veterinary surgeon specializing in soft tissue surgery, minimally invasive surgery, interventional radiology, and surgical robotics in dogs and cats.
After earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, Prof. Buote completed advanced clinical training, including a small animal surgical residency, and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (Small Animal). She subsequently joined the faculty at Cornell University, where she combines a busy referral surgical service with teaching, clinical research, and mentorship of veterinary students, interns, residents, and practicing veterinarians.
Prof. Buote has a particular interest in minimally invasive surgery, laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures, surgical oncology, interventional radiology, advanced soft tissue surgery, and surgical robotics. Her research focuses on developing innovative surgical techniques, improving perioperative patient care, postoperative rehabilitation, and enhancing long-term outcomes for small animal patients. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications and book chapters and is a sought-after invited speaker at national and international veterinary conferences.
In recognition of her expertise and leadership in minimally invasive surgery, Prof. Buote was named an ACVS Founding Fellow in Minimally Invasive Surgery (Soft Tissue)—one of the highest distinctions awarded by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. She also serves as the Director of the Cornell Richard P. Riney Canine Health Center, leading one of the world's foremost centers dedicated to advancing canine health through clinical excellence, research, and innovation.
An award-winning educator, Prof. Buote is highly regarded for her engaging teaching style and her commitment to evidence-based veterinary medicine. She is also the Founder and President of the Association of Women Veterinary Surgeons, promoting mentorship, leadership, and professional development within the veterinary surgical community.
