Dr. Kurt S. Schulz, DVM, MS, DACVS, is a board-certified veterinary surgeon and Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS), internationally recognized for his expertise in small animal orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, surgical education, and evidence-based veterinary medicine.
Dr. Schulz earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Cornell University, followed by a surgical residency and Master of Science degree at Virginia Tech. He subsequently held academic appointments at Texas A&M University before joining the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, where he served for nine years as Associate Professor of Small Animal Surgery, Chief of Surgery at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, and Head of the Small Animal Orthopedic Research Program.
Throughout his distinguished academic career, Dr. Schulz has made significant contributions to veterinary orthopedic surgery, with particular interests in cranial cruciate ligament disease, arthroscopy, fracture management, minimally invasive orthopedic surgery, joint disease, and clinical outcomes research. He has authored more than 65 peer-reviewed scientific publications, contributed numerous book chapters, and co-edited the internationally respected textbooks Small Animal Surgery and Small Animal Arthroscopy, which are widely used by veterinary surgeons and residents worldwide.
An internationally sought-after lecturer, Dr. Schulz has presented at major veterinary congresses across North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. His work has been instrumental in promoting evidence-based clinical decision-making and advancing international collaborative research aimed at improving surgical outcomes and standards of care in veterinary orthopedics.
In addition to his academic and clinical achievements, Dr. Schulz has served on the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) Examination Committee, contributing to the education and certification of future veterinary surgeons. Earlier in his career, he served as a veterinarian with the United States Peace Corps in Morocco, reflecting his longstanding commitment to international veterinary service and education. Through his leadership, research, teaching, and clinical innovation, Dr. Schulz has played a significant role in advancing small animal surgery and continues to be recognized as one of the leading educators and experts in veterinary orthopedics worldwide.
